WHETHER OR NOT TO BRING
A CAR TO THE ISLAND

While there is a bus transportation system (runs between mid May and early October) and taxis available on the island, our guests should be aware that we are located "up-island" which is the more quiet and remote part of the island, so the decision on whether to bring a car depends on what you wish to do while you are here. Taxis are readily available at the ferry terminals and at the airport (reservations are not necessary). We are about a 25-30 minute taxi ride from the ferries and about the same to the larger towns of Vineyard Haven, Oak Bluffs and Edgartown. The approximate cost is $30 each way. We are within walking distance to the quaint village of Menemsha and to Menemsha Beach. We can also have bikes delivered to the inn for you. Shuttle buses are available to the 2 private Chilmark beaches during July and August (and we provide towels, umbrellas and beach chairs) free of charge to our guests. If you are staying for more than 2 days, or if this is your first trip to the island and want to explore, or if you are coming during the shoulder season when the shuttles aren't running frequently, then we would suggest either bringing your own car over on the ferry or renting one on the island. If you are happy going to our beautiful beaches every day and may just wish to go shopping in another town one day, the public bus and/or taxis could work fine for you. If you are in doubt, give us a call and we'll help you decide.

INFORMATION ON BRINGING A CAR TO THE ISLAND BY FERRY
Reservations for cars MUST be made well in advance of your trip, especially during the summer months. The Steamship Authority operates a year-round service from Woods Hole, Massachusetts to Martha's Vineyard. It takes approximately 45 minutes to cross. For reservations and schedule information, call the Steamship Authority at (508) 477-8600 or view their web site at www.steamshipauthority.com

You will be asked for your license plate number at the time of the reservation and tickets are non-transferrable. If you do not get your first choice, ask to be placed on their waiting list. They do a good job of matching requests to their openings.

When you make your reservation, please remember our check-in and check-out times. If you arrive early or depart late you are welcome to store your luggage with us, but our check-out time is 11:00 a.m. and our check-in time is 2:00 p.m.

DIRECTIONS TO
WOODS HOLE FERRY BY CAR

From Boston: Follow Southeast Expressway (I-93 South) or take Route 128 (95 South) to Route 24 South to I-495 South (turns into Route 25) to Bourne. Cross the Bourne Bridge and follow Route 28 South to Falmouth and then to Woods Hole. Allow yourself at least 2 hours at non-peak traffic times to drive, park and connect with the ferry.

Off site parking lots are located in Falmouth and other locations, 4 miles before Woods Hole. There is a daily parking fee for all lots. DIRECTIONS TO
BEACH PLUM INN
ONCE ON THE ISLAND

From the Vineyard Haven Ferry: From ferry parking lot turn left. Stay in the right lane as you pass the A&P to the stop sign ("5 corners"). Turn right heading up the hill towards Main Street staying in the left lane. Bear left onto State Road (as opposed to turning right into the town of Vineyard Haven). Approximately 5 miles out of Vineyard Haven will be a sign for Menemsha to turn right - this will put you onto North Road (this is past both Cronig's grocery stores on your right as a landmark). Another 5-6 miles, look for a sign on the left side of the road for Gay Head/Chilmark. Continue going straight-you're almost there! On your right, just past our neighbor's sign, the Menemsha Inn, you will see our sign. Turn right onto Beach Plum Lane. If you reach the village of Menemsha, you've gone a bit too far.

From Oak Bluffs Ferry: From ferry dock proceed straight (Beach Road). You'll pass the harbor on your right and eventually go over the bridge into Vineyard Haven. Once you reach the "5 corners" intersection, follow the directions from Vineyard Haven above.

From Airport: Take a right turn out of airport onto Edgartown-Vineyard Haven Road. Turn left at intersection with South Road (after Mill Pond on your right). Follow South Road into Chilmark, straight thru intersection with Middle Road (after Chilmark Community Center and Compass Bank). This is now Menemsha Crossroads. At end of this road, turn left onto North Road. We are the 2nd driveway on the right.
